At Briarhopper Winery, we are passionate about creating exceptional wines. Our journey began long ago with Bill helping his Grandmother make wine at an early age. We have taken that knowledge and transformed it into state of the art winemaking.
How did we decide on the name you ask? We were sitting in the living room one cold evening trying to come up with a name for the winery. Every name we thought of had been used somewhere. Lisa was browsing on eBay and all of the sudden, out of the blue, a copy of Bill’s grandfather’s, on his father’s side, songbook popped up for sale. His grandfather’s nickname as a country and western singer was “The Red Headed Briarhopper”. Lisa looked at Bill and said “That’s it, that’s the name of our winery Briarhopper Winery! And so it began! Briarhopper is an old-fashioned word for a rabbit. Bill’s grandfather was also an avid rabbit hunter. Bill’s grandmother on his mother’s side had Bill helping make wine from a very early age. He would go pick dandelions from the yard and fields and bring them to her to make homemade dandelion wine. She made wine from just about any fruit available. He remembers putting balloons over the bottles after she cooked the wine and put it in the bottles. They would take the bottles down to the cellar and let them sit until the balloons popped and then they would cork them. Things are a lot more advanced now with the equipment and such, but we still put a little bit of love into each bottle, just like Grandma and Grandpa did!
